Printer Ink & Toner FAQ: Compatible Cartridges, Delivery & Returns
Welcome to the Inkrefill NZ printer ink and toner FAQ. This guide answers common questions about compatible printer ink, toner cartridges, cartridge recognition, printer compatibility, ordering, payment, New Zealand delivery, returns and troubleshooting. If you already know your cartridge number, start with the relevant printer ink and toner shop or browse by Brother, Canon, Epson or HP.
How do I find the correct printer ink or toner?
Use the exact printer model and cartridge number as your starting point. The cartridge code may be printed on the old cartridge, packaging, printer label or documentation. For example, toner families and ink families can have very similar-looking numbers, while a single printer family may use standard and high-yield versions. Check brand, model, cartridge number, colour and capacity before ordering. If you need help, browse the relevant brand category and compare the compatibility information shown for the cartridge family.
Are compatible printer cartridges safe to use?
Compatible cartridges are third-party replacement cartridges designed for specified printer models. They are not the same as cartridges manufactured and branded by the printer manufacturer. Compatibility depends on the cartridge family and printer model, so always confirm the supported models before purchase. Using a compatible cartridge does not mean every compatible cartridge is suitable for every printer. The correct cartridge number remains the most important check.
Will a compatible cartridge damage my printer?
A correctly matched compatible cartridge is designed for the printer models listed for that cartridge. Problems can occur when an incorrect cartridge is ordered, installed incorrectly, has a damaged chip or is not supported by the particular printer generation. Follow the installation instructions supplied with the cartridge and check the printer model and cartridge number before installation. If your printer does not recognise a new cartridge, use our HP compatible cartridge troubleshooting guide for practical checks.
Why does my printer say the cartridge is not recognised?
Recognition messages can have several causes. Confirm that the cartridge number is correct, remove and reinstall the cartridge, make sure protective packaging has been removed, check that the cartridge is seated correctly and inspect the electrical contacts or chip for visible contamination or damage. Restarting the printer can also help it reinitialise the cartridge. If the printer has recently changed its firmware or software behaviour, check the manufacturer’s current support information. Do not assume that a recognition message automatically means the cartridge is faulty.
What is the difference between ink and toner?
Ink cartridges are used in inkjet printers and contain liquid ink. Toner cartridges are used in laser printers and contain toner powder. Laser printers may also use a separate drum unit, depending on the printer design. If the printer reports a drum warning, replacing toner alone may not resolve the issue. Choose the consumable specified for your exact printer.
Should I buy standard or XL/high-yield cartridges?
High-yield or XL cartridges are designed to provide a larger page capacity where the printer supports them. They can be useful for customers who print frequently, but not every printer supports every high-yield cartridge. Check the cartridge number and compatible printer list before choosing an XL version. For colour printers, remember that black, cyan, magenta and yellow cartridges may have separate cartridge numbers.
Can I replace only one colour?
Many modern inkjet printers use individual colour cartridges, allowing the empty colour to be replaced separately. The exact arrangement depends on the printer and cartridge family. Check the cartridge number for the colour you need rather than automatically buying a full set. You can browse Canon ink cartridges, Brother ink cartridges, HP ink cartridges and Epson ink cartridges by brand.
Do compatible cartridges contain the same amount of ink or toner?
Capacity varies by cartridge family and product. Some compatible cartridges are standard yield while others are high yield. The relevant product information should be checked for cartridge capacity, colour and stated page yield where available. Page yield is an estimate based on defined testing conditions and actual results can vary with document type, coverage, printer settings and maintenance cycles.
Can a compatible cartridge affect my printer warranty?
Printer warranty terms are set by the printer manufacturer. A compatible cartridge does not automatically mean that every warranty claim is invalid, but a manufacturer may distinguish between a general warranty issue and damage directly caused by an unsuitable or defective consumable. Keep the printer model, cartridge information and purchase records so that any issue can be investigated accurately.
How does delivery work in New Zealand?
For current delivery information, see our Delivery Information and Shipping Policy. Check your delivery address carefully, especially for rural locations and business addresses. Delivery time can vary according to destination, courier network, order processing and circumstances outside the store’s control.
What is the returns process?
Review the Returns Policy before sending anything back. If an item is incorrect, damaged or unsuitable, contact Inkrefill NZ first so the appropriate return instructions can be provided. Do not send a return to an address simply because it appears elsewhere on the website; use the current return instructions supplied by the store.
How can I pay for my order?
Customers can review the Online Bank Payment information for bank transfer instructions and our Billing Terms & Conditions for payment and invoicing information.
